Over time, I have been asked on more than one occasion for tips to manage anxiety. So, I have decided to post a list of the top ten things that I have found help.
Please note, I am not a physician, so none of these tips will “cure” anxiety; they will simply help you on your journey.
Ten Tips For Surviving Anxiety
Take time out for self-care: Self-care is often a forgotten and underrated step in the battle with anxiety; many people feel guilty or selfish for taking time for themselves.
Cut out the caffeine: Caffeine has a habit of waking of your nervous system, making you more prone to anxious thoughts and feelings. Therefore, cutting out caffeine will make a huge difference in your battle with anxiety. Instead, I can suggest drinking more herbal teas; I find that they are soothing to drink.
Listen to soothing music: Music has a huge impact on a person’s emotional well-being. Music with a slower tempo and sadder them will make a person feel more depressed than music with a lighter, more upbeat tempo.

Ease up on the news watching: While it is a good thing to be informed about world events. It is my experience that too much news will only increase your anxiety level. So, remind yourself to take a break from the seriousness and watch something that you find relaxing. I know that I like to read a book when everything gets to be too much.
Buy a Plant: Recently, on a suggestion from my therapist, I bought two plants for my room.
For many people, including myself, the act of nurturing something (be it a plant or animal) can work to offset your anxious thought. As a result, I have become the plant person that I never thought that I was.
Find a creative outlet: Creative outlets can be amazingly helpful for someone who suffers anxiety. For me, it has been blogging. However, you can be creative in many forms, such as painting, playing an instrument, writing, etc..
Exercise: Often it can be tough to feel the motivation to exercise when you suffer from a condition like anxiety. Nevertheless, it is important to push yourself to do a little bit; even if it is just going around the block once or twice.Nine times out of ten the fresh air will help relieve so of your anxious thoughts.
Don’t alienate yourself: Here is a tip that I, myself, have had to work hard to follow.
If you are like me, when you are feeling low or anxious, you want to retreat and lock yourself in your room. However, I have discovered that alienating yourself during those times will actually make the situation worse.
As such, I have been striving to be more available and spend more time with my family.
Talk with your physician: Seriously, do it.
Believe me, I know how difficult it is to start this particular conversation with the Doctor. However, it is incredibly important that you do.
You DO NOT have to tuck anxiety away and suffer alone. Doctors are there to help you.
DON’T forget to take your medication: If you are prescribed a medication by your Doctor for anxiety, it is so important that you take it as directed. At no point should you assume that you are better and take yourself off your medication. If you are feeling better, it is because the medication is working … not because you are cured. I too have learned this lesson the hard way.
